EVENT: Awareness Raising Reception

Date: Thursday 6 June 2019

Time: 12.00 - 13.30

Location: Pierhead

Description: Vitamin B deficiency affects around 350,000 in Wales. Recent research has uncovered a major problem with the test used to assess the B12 status of patients. The major cause of B12 deficiency is Pernicious Anaemia but since the Schilling Test was phased out 30 years ago, there is no accurate assay to determine whether the patient has Pernicious Anaemia. Consequently, mis-diagnosis is rife and 33 of the Members of the PA Society waited between 2 and 5 years for an accurate diagnosis. The cost in wasted and repeated GP consultations is at the very least 8 million pounds per year in England alone. NICE has agreed that this problem needs thorough investigation but we want elected representatives to be aware of this so that NICE will consider this issue to be a priority. Left undiagnosed and untreated, Vitamin B12 deficiency leads to serious and irreversible nerve damage.

Open to the public: Attendance at the event is by invitation only however the Senedd and the Pierhead will remain accessible to the public during our normal opening hours.
