This bill would criminalise loving parents who smack their children in an appropriate way. Smacking is one form of discipline parents can use to bring their children up to be good citizens. It’s vastly different from abuse.

No, current laws protect children from abuse. This new legislation would do nothing to help deal with abuse; it would divert resources from dealing with genuine cases of abuse to dealing with parents who aren’t doing anything wrong.

Either the Bill wouldn’t be enforced effectively, or it would divert police and other resources from dealing with destructive and harmful crimes.

Parents who smack their children occasionally as part of their loving discipline shouldn’t be criminalised. The real problem that need to be dealt with is abuse of children. If police have to deal with parents who’ve smacked their children appropriately they’ll be less effective in dealing with actual child abuse than they currently are.
