I agree that Defence of Reasonable Punishment needs to be abolished, as personally and professionally I do not agree with physical punishment. Physical punishment is harmful for children and leads to poorer outcomes and it also carries the risk of escalation into physical abuse and in some cases lead to the death of a child . Physical punishment does not work, it gives children and young people a negative experience that leaves them feeling scared, worried, upset and alone. This is no way to make anyone feel and we should be doing all that we can to protect children and young people.
Also the current law is not clear at present and as a professional it is difficult to give clear advice to parents. I feel children should have the same protection from assault as adults do and I am pleased that Welsh Government is leading the way in the UK and doing this.
